Project description

Migratory species in Central Asia are highly vulnerable to climate change. As a result of changing migration patterns, protected areas are rendered ineffective. Changes in the use of pastures (extension of grazing periods and shifting grazing areas to higher elevations) are ex-pected to lead to increased human-wildlife conflicts. In order to increase the resilience of people and wildlife in Central Asia to climate change ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) measures and climate change-informed wildlife management will be tested in pilot sites.

Expected Results

The CAMCA project has achieved significant milestones: General: Training on developing Panorama case studies, compilation of existing case studies, and finalization of species climate change vulnerability assessments. Policy briefs and species fact sheets have been developed. Kazakhstan: Despite changes in the Ministry of Ecology, progress was made in environmental journalism training and adaptation measures. Study tours promoted knowledge exchange on conservation and sustainable land management. Kyrgyzstan: Political stabilization facilitated the identification of conservation measures and expansion of the Naryn State Nature Reserve. Advances were also made in developing ecological corridors and integrating CAMCA outputs into national strategies. Tajikistan: Finalization of situational models and selection of conservation measures highlight efforts in sustainable resource management and biodiversity conservation, particularly in the Yaghnob National Park.
